A Dam Failure Assessment

Dam failure assessment including an investigation of dam failure mechanisms, hydraulic modeling of flood and dam break scenarios, and flood inundation mapping.

The assessment was completed based on the identified downstream receptors, estimated access road usage, and current topography. The consequence category classification for the proposed locations was estimated for two of the TSFs. The main tasks involved included:

  • Review of previous hydraulic studies

  • Presentation of the catchment area and two proposed TSFs

  • Identification of failure mechanisms for the TSF

  • Development of the hydraulic model for existing conditions

  • Representation of the proposed development area within the hydraulic model

  • Scenario modeling of extreme flood events, considering with and without dam failure

  • Utilised HEC-HMS to assess the hydrology of the Dams regional catchment contributing to major stream flows

  • Utilised HEC-RAS to model two-dimensional unsteady flow dam break analysis

  • Consequence category assessment and Population at Risk Assessment in accordance with the guidance provided by ANCOLD.
